Tropical Storm Alex strengthens

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The first Tropical Depression of the Atlantic hurricane season has strengthened to become the first named storm of the season. Tropical Depression One formed off the Honduran coast Friday afternoon and became better organized overnight. The newly-named Tropical Storm Alex is likely to slowly strengthen before making landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula. Tropical Storm Warnings are posted for the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula. The storm is expected to move into the Gulf over the next few days. Concerns linger over the impacts of the storm on ongoing oil spill clean-up efforts. However, the storm is expected to remain in the western Gulf of Mexico. Alex is the first name on the 6 year rotating list of names for the Atlantic hurricane basin. Storms are named after the maximum sustained winds reach 39 mph or higher.
